Choosing a Pushchair

Before deciding what type of pushchair or pram to buy, there are some important points to consider. Your lifestyle and both the needs of your baby AND yourself have to be catered for.

1. If you regularly use public transport, or have steps as access to your home, a lightweight, compact folding pram or pushchair would be your best choice.

2. For car use, first check the size of your car boot against the folded size of the pram or pushchair you may buy. Please remember that, even if you own a car, you will still use a pram or pushchair when on foot, shopping for instance. A good choice may be a multi-function travel system that is both a baby car seat and a pushchair in one.

3. If you like walking, go for a sturdy pushchair with lockable wheels. Swivel wheels can make a pushchair easier to manoeuvre. Fixed wheels make rough terrain easier to handle. There are some pushchairs which feature both fixed and swivel wheel options. With all pushchairs make sure you choose the correct handle height for yourself and your partner. Models which have adjustable height handles can be useful.

4. If space is at a premium at home it would be better to opt for a pram or pushchair that allows the seat unit to fold.

5. Your baby's needs: Newborn babies need to lie back, so you will require a pram, a pushchair/carrycot combination (3 in 1 pushchair), or a pushchair with a lie-back facility. Some models have fully reversible seat units so your baby can face you.

Think about where your baby will sleep. A Moses basket, crib, cot or carrycot. Knowing this will help you decide what kind of pram or carrycot to purchase.
